Clinical Zverev Bags 50th Surface Win to Stop Royer

Second seed Alexander Zverev fires 14 aces to defeat Valentin Royer 6-1, 6-3, 7-6(3) at Wimbledon 2026, securing his 50th career victory on grass.

Introduction:

Second seed Alexander Zverev continued his fine form at Wimbledon 2026 with a highly convincing victory on Court No. 1. The newly crowned Roland Garros champion showcased his grass-court authority to defeat French world number 75 Valentin Royer in straight sets, sealing a 6-1, 6-3, 7-6(3) win in just over two hours.

The towering German entered the match under pressure to improve his historical record at the All England Club, where he has never progressed past the fourth round. However, playing with the high-octane confidence of a recent Grand Slam winner, Alexander looked entirely at ease on the slick surface to secure his 50th career tour-level match victory on grass.

Red-Hot Zverev Demolishes the Opening Sets

The second-round encounter started with an absolute statement of intent from the world number three. After dropping the very first game of the match on Royer’s serve, Alexander went into overdrive. He reeled off a blistering run of nine consecutive games, completely freezing out the French qualifier from the baseline exchanges.

Zverev’s serve was an un-returnable weapon throughout the opening hour. The German won a spectacular 85% of his first-serve points and blasted 14 aces across the match. Royer tried to counter by rushing forward to the net, but Zverev’s 6-foot-6 wingspan made it incredibly difficult to pass. The second seed ruthlessly broke the Frenchman’s delivery five times to take the first two sets 6-1, 6-3 with minimal fuss.

Gritty Late Resurgence Causes Third-Set Drama

The third set proved to be a much tighter tactical affair as Royer finally found his rhythm. After Alexander secured an early break, a brief lapse in concentration saw the German drop his serve for the first and only time. Royer capitalized beautifully, hitting flat forehands to push the set into an intense tiebreak.

However, Alexander regained his focus in the tiebreak. Moving with great balance, he quickly built a commanding lead before sealing the match with a massive unreturned delivery. With this victory, Zverev moves into the Round of 32, where he will face American Marcos Giron.
