In April, Ferdinando Cotugno wrote as above Esquire Italy: Today, those who force Milan to move and live, those who clean it, who do the main work (…) can no longer live there. Investors come first, then tourists, then residents, then city users and commuters. Milan is to become a closed system, a city great for investing and terrible for living». Perfect for investing and terrible for living. Will it be true? Finding affordable accommodation in the capital of Lombardy is certainly difficult. According to Lucia Tozzi, author of The Invention of Milan (Cronopio), a whole range of rhetoric is grafted onto a city full of contradictions, while Bertram Niessen explained: “Being very rich, Milan is a deeply classed city.
There are rich people and families with many houses and incomes, but, the whole intellectual middle class, those who do not come from rich families, is poor.” How to find a rental in Milan at that time? The rental company asked this, Housing Anywhere International, analyzed more than 64,000 properties in 23 European cities. As a result, Milan is expensive, but not the most expensive in Europe, and – above all – lately it’s paying off.
In the second quarter of 2023 – i.e. in the period from April to June 2023 – we note that on average renting an apartment in Milan costs 2.8% less compared to the same months in 2022. Living there, of course, still costs €1,750: less than Amsterdam and Paris, more than Berlin and Barcelona. Analysis Housing Anywhere International targeted 18- and 35-year-olds, particularly counting furnished properties with at least one bedroom, shows that the most expensive European city where you live Lisbon, where on average such accommodation costs EUR 2,500 per month (and increases by 25% annually).
There is another Italian in the Top 8, i.e Florence where living costs slightly less than Milan (€1,700, up 21%). Statesman, who processed the data, specifies that the increase in rental costs in Portugal “is an alarming rate, especially considering that local wages are not growing at the same rate.” Who knows, maybe the same ratio does not apply to Italy. And instead of Lisbonwhy not move to Chavesin the north of Portugal, near the border with Spain, where can you rent a house for an average of €300 per month?
Below is the complete ranking of European cities where is on average more expensive house rental:
- Lisbon – Portugal (€2500 per month)
- Amsterdam Netherlands (€2300);
- Paris – France (€1802);
- Milan – Italy (€1750);
- Berlin – Germany (€1748);
- Florence – Italy (€1700);
- Barcelona – Spain (€1580).
