To explore the impact of AI on these scenarios, 457 participants, comprising doctors, assistants, and nurses, engaged in diagnosing and formulating treatment plans using an AI-based system.

The findings proved to be both intriguing and illuminating. Participants relying solely on AI decisions experienced a modest uptick of 2.9% in diagnostic accuracy. However, the introduction of an explanation alongside the AI decision saw a more substantial increase, reaching 4.4%. This implies that the integration of AI has the potential to significantly augment medical decisions, especially when accompanied by transparent explanations.

The narrative took a critical turn as researchers deliberately injected bias into the AI models, leading them to generate intentionally incorrect results. Jenna Wiens, a co-author of the study, provided valuable insights into the inner workings of AI models. “Artificial intelligence models are sensitive to shortcuts and incorrect correlations found in the data they are trained with,” Wiens explains. “If clinicians were to rely on such a model, it could inadvertently reinforce existing biases, posing significant ethical concerns.”
