Sharmila Dhankar Claims Historic Para-Athletics Gold in Glasgow 2026

Read how Indian shot putter Sharmila Dhankar made history at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games by winning India’s first-ever para-athletics gold medal.

A Golden Moment for Indian Sports at Glasgow 2026

Indian para-athlete Sharmila Dhankar has proudly written her name into the history books by clinching a historic gold medal at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. Competing in the highly competitive women’s shot put F57 final, the 40-year-old sports icon put on an absolute masterclass of power and technique. Her phenomenal performance delivered India its very first gold medal in para-athletics history at the Commonwealth Games, sparking joyous celebrations across the nation.

Dhankar asserted her dominance over the field by recording a phenomenal season-best throw of 9.81 meters. Her winning effort finished comfortably ahead of Ghana’s Zinabu Issah, who took the silver medal with a throw of 8.65 meters. Adding to India’s joy, compatriot Shilpa K. Shyla claimed the bronze medal, completing a rare and beautiful double podium finish for the country.

Overcoming Adversity Beyond the Sporting Arena

While the gold medal is a massive sporting achievement, Dhankar’s journey to the top of the podium is a truly inspiring tale of human resilience. Born in Chitrauli village in Haryana, she contracted polio at just two years old, which permanently affected one of her legs. Later in life, she endured heavy personal trauma, surviving an abusive first marriage while raising two daughters.

Her life took a completely positive turn when she remarried. Her supportive husband, Ajit Singh, encouraged her to pick up para-athletics at the relatively late age of 34. The family believed so deeply in her talent that they even sold their house in 2023 to fund her intense training requirements. Standing under the stadium lights in Glasgow, every single sacrifice was beautifully validated.

A Flawless Performance Under Maximum Pressure

Competing in the F57 classification requires immense upper-body strength, as athletes launch the heavy shot put from a securely fixed throwing seat. Dhankar looked focused from her very first attempt, setting an aggressive benchmark with an opening throw of 9.48 meters.
