Diogo Jota’s decisive goal secures a narrow 1-0 victory for Liverpool against Crystal Palace in a thrilling Premier League encounter.
Introduction:
Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon. Diogo Jota’s early goal marked his 100th start for the Reds, securing an important three points for Arne Slot’s side. With this win, Liverpool has now won six of their seven league games in the 2024-25 season.
Crystal Palace openers present all sorts of drama early in the game.
Crystal Palace started brightly attacking. Within the first minute of play, it was Eddie Nketiah in a golden position in front of goal. A good right-sided cross created the room for Nketiah to drop the ball over Alisson Becker, only to be denied at the end by the offside flag. It proved a grow warning for Liverpool as Palace tried to upset the visitors early on.

Jota Opens the Score for Liverpool
Despite this early alarm, Liverpool quickly took control of the game, forcing it with neat passing and movement around the field. In the 9th minute, the Reds carved an opening in great style against Palace. A clever through-ball from Kostas Tsimikas on the left met a low cross from Cody Gakpo inside the box. A perfect time for Jota, who slot the ball coolly past Dean Henderson, giving the Reds the lead. This was a clinical finish of a milestone by Jota – in his 100th start for the Reds, and that also provided Liverpool the ideal start to this game.

Liverpool’s Domination Not Compensated
As the match moved into the first half, Liverpool took maximum control of possession with more than 80 per cent of the ball at one instance. They seemed dangerous and were further looking for a second goal. Gakpo came close when he curled one just over the bar from the edge of the area. Even Trent Alexander-Arnold’s powerful half-volley forced Henderson into making that diving save.

Under such pressure, though, the Reds could not extend their lead. When set up by Ryan Gravenberch, Jota took another opportunity for his side but could not muster enough power to his shot and the ball drifted wide. It was not until the first half had almost run its course that the visitors, Palace came forward strongly and Virgil van Dijk spurned an headed opening that sent a corner wide.

Palace Fight Back, But Alisson Stands Strong
Although Liverpool dominated the game, Palace found moments to threaten on the counter-attack. Maxence Lacroix’s crisp pass created an opening for Ismaila Sarr, who saw his low drive well saved by Alisson before the break.

The second half started much like the first-half with Liverpool dictating the pace of play. Dominik Szoboszlai replaced Alexis Mac Allister in midfield but the rhythm of the game was hardly affected. Mohamed Salah had a clear scoring chance to snatch the game for his team but his effort was cleared by Henderson off his chest from a close range.
Nervy End as Alisson Leaves the Field Injured
Another opportunity for the victory to seal itself went begging as Jota headed Alexand-Arnold’s set-piece, but Palace wouldn’t give up and Alisson had another save to make off Nketiah’s long-range shot from outside the box. Another by Eberechi Eze came to no luck as well, Alisson keeping it out.

When the game reaches its final stages, Liverpool took a blow when Alisson was injured and had to be replaced. This paved way for Vitezslav Jaros to make his debut on the first team, and it was that instant that called him to save a shot from Will Hughes and then collect Eze’s attempt late in Palace counterattack.

Liverpool Hold On to Make Sure Things End Well
Though the ending was very much nail-biting, Liverpool managed to hold this 1-0 lead to walk off with a vital win. The Reds maintained their lead at the top of the Premier League with this victory and continue strong at the start of the 2024-25 campaign.
