Milan had been keen to kick off their campaign to get back from the previous defeat to Bayer Leverkusen back into domestic rhythms. And the two teams were badly in need of points so the game at Stadio Artemio Franchi began at an simply unbelievable pace. Milan was dominating possession but it was Fiorentina who opened the scoring with the first clear goal coming off Milan’s mistake.

The Viola really had a chance to take the initiative in the 19th minute when Theo Hernández committed an unnecessary foul on Dodô inside the box, awarding the hosts a penalty kick. Milan’s Mike Maignan saved his side with a diving block from the right to deny Kean’s penalty from Moise Kean. Fiorentina remained undeterred and reaped the rewards within the space of a few minutes. Fiorentina opened the deadlock
Former Milan player Yacine Adli opened the scoring for Fiorentina by curling a beautiful shot that kissed the post before finding the back of the net. It was a bitter moment for Milan as Adli’s strike put the Viola ahead 1-0.

Pulisic leveled the score but gave away the opportunities at Milan’s end.
AC Milan got their turn as well in order to make things level before halftime when Tijjani Reijnders was fouled by Fiorentina’s Ranieri inside the box to give the Rossoneri a penalty. Theo Hernández stepped up to take the spot kick but was matched by Fiorentina goalkeeper David De Gea who had dived to his left in a resembling situation of Maignan’s earlier heroics to leave the score at 1-0 going into halftime.

It resumed with the same frantic rhythm in the second half. Milan were to be awarded another penalty in the 54th minute, this time for a foul on Gabbia. Abraham took the penalty, but De Gea did his heroics once again for Fiorentina denying Milan an equalizer from the spot.
However, Milan persisted and this paid in the 60th minute when a pinpoint cross by Theo Hernández across the face of goal reached Christian Pulisic, whose volley showed exactly why his team remained alive in this tie. That was Pulisic’s fourth goal in four games, a lone shining light on an otherwise tough night for Milan.

The score was level, though both teams would be looking for a winner. Under pressure, however, Fiorentina were able to find an opening back into the game in a long ball forward in the 73rd minute, which Kean flicked on, and the ball floated just over Maignan to Guðmundsson to slot home clinically, 2-1. Milan’s defense was out, and Fiorentina punished them fully.

Milan pushed hard for another equalizer with Chukwueze and Pulisic at the helm, but De Gea’s sharp goalkeeping and defensive resilience from the Fiorentina team kept them at bay. In the dying minutes of the game, Kean almost extended the lead of Fiorentina by rapping the crossbar violently with a strike in injury time.
Fiorentina survived a late Milan flurry and took all three points as the men in red won 2-1, sending the Rossoneri to back-to-back defeats. For Milan, their winning streak in the league came to an end; they will have to recharge over the international break.

What’s Next
Milan would have looked forward to the international break to refocus and address some areas of improvement, such as better finishing and complete defensive concentration. Not all things are going quite right, however: Pulisic’s resurgence is clearly a plus, but the team has to tighten up at the back and play better on the big moments if they are to challenge truly for the Serie A title this season.
