Mosques can be much more than buildings dedicated to prayer. Like churches, they can reach a level of beauty and historical value to be rightfully considered works of art, architectural and cultural heritage of humanity, and symbols of entire communities. It is not easy to say which are the most beautiful mosques: there are very ancient mosques with fascinating stories, thousands of years old inscriptions, and works of art that will make your eyes widen. However, some mosques are famous all over the world for their beauty and you should visit them at least once in your life.
1. BLUE MOSQUE, ISTANBUL, TÜRKIYE
We are very close to Italy and in Turkey’s largest city we find the legendary “Blue Mosque”. You will understand the name immediately when you look at the photos: there are more than 20 thousand turquoise-colored pieces that form a huge mosaic.
You are amazed by the beauty of the great mosque, the domes, the mosaics, the gardens, and the peace you feel when you visit it.
2. HASSAN II MOSQUE, CASABLANCA, MOROCCO
Even in this case, we are very close to Italy, to Casablanca, a large Moroccan city already loved by Italians who visit it for a thousand different reasons, from summer vacations to interest in the immense culture of the African country.
The Hassan II Mosque is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in the world. The materials used for its construction with a work of ingenuity and effort are marble, granite, wood, and ceramics. The dimensions are also incredible: it can accommodate 25,000 people. While there are 80,000 people in the esplanade outside capacity.
3. SHAH MOSQUE, ESFAHAN, IRAN
Finally a mosque from Persia. Located in Iran, it is a beautiful Shah Mosque. It is also called the “Royal Mosque or the Mosque of the Imam” and is an ancient temple that dates back to the seventeenth century.
There are also beautiful mosaics in this mosque. The type of mosaic known as “seven colors” was actually invented during its construction. The colors and architecture are truly stunning.
