Jean-Philippe Mateta’s Brace Seals Palace’s 2-0 Triumph Over United

Explore the highlights of Jean-Philippe Mateta’s impressive brace that secured a 2-0 win for the Palace over Manchester United. A match to remember!

Introduction:

Crystal Palace maintained their good runs at Old Trafford as they thumped Manchester United 2-0, where a second half brace by Jean-Philippe Mateta sealed the deal for the Londoners. This is the fourth win for Palace in six league visits to the famous stadium, bringing their unbeaten streak on their travels to eight matches.

Eze’s Surprise Inclusion Boosts Palace

Before the match, Palace had received a welcome boost in the form of Ebere Eze, who featured on the bench. Manager Oliver Glasner had indicated that Eze would not make the trip, but following a productive training session on Saturday, the No. 10 was deemed fit enough to be part of the squad.

During the buildup, Glasner was seen reminiscing about his previous encounter with Manchester United’s Ruben Amorim during his stint at Eintracht Frankfurt. He stated that they both had the same attacking philosophies. This approach was evident right from the start as both teams displayed offensive intent.

End-to-End First Half Sees Missed Chances

Manchester United started on a bright note as Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo threatened Palace early on. After five minutes of play, inside the six-yard box, Garnacho was found by Mainoo, but the Argentine was blocked by Chris Richards. Shortly later, an equally impressive fingertip save by Dean Henderson denied Kobbie Mainoo when the ball rebounded off the post.

Palace responded with their own attacking prowess, coming close through Daniel Muñoz’s header from a Tyrick Mitchell cross, which narrowly missed the target. United had another opportunity as Lisandro Martínez’s volley was blocked, while Palace’s Maxence Lacroix forced Andre Onana into a sharp save with a long-range effort.

In the second half, Palace took over the game. Daichi Kamada was forced wide from a through ball but managed to set up Mitchell, whose curling shot was deflected just past the far post. Just before halftime, Mateta latched onto a perfectly weighted pass from Jefferson Lerma but saw his clipped finish spin just wide of the post.

The second half resumed with United pressing for a breakthrough. Bruno Fernandes tested Henderson with a powerful strike from the edge of the box, and Manuel Ugarte’s close-range effort was blocked by the Palace shot-stopper’s legs.

On the hour mark, Glasner introduced Eze, whose impact was immediate. He delivered a deep free-kick to the far post, finding Lacroix, whose header looped over Onana and struck the crossbar. Mateta reacted quickest, bundling home the rebound for his fifth goal in as many Premier League matches in 2025, giving Palace a deserved lead.

United tried to get back into the game but could not construct any outright chances. Amad Diallo saw a shot clear the bar, and a series of long-range efforts did not trouble Henderson. Palace looked to be doubling the lead with a set-piece copy of the opener, but the Lerma header drifted across goal and wide of the far post.

Late Drama Seals Palace’s Triumph

United responded with a late onslaught that managed to gain several corners that really stirred the Palace defense. But in general, though, Henderson enjoyed ruling his area, and punches and claims sealed his lead.

Palace’s grip ended up being sealed in the dying moments of the match as Ismaïla Sarr chipped an excellent ball through for Muñoz to wisely square for Mateta to hammer home his second goal as Watford relegated Palace 2-0.

Adding to the positive evening, Adam Wharton made his return from injury, coming on in the final minute for his first appearance since October 30th. Marc Guéhi then made a critical intervention in front of goal to secure Palace’s third consecutive clean sheet on the road.

Palace’s Unstoppable Away Form

This win continues Crystal Palace’s impressive away form, as they remain unbeaten in eight successive Premier League games on the road. Mateta’s lethal finishing, Henderson’s goalkeeping heroics, and Glasner’s tactical masterclass ensured Palace left Old Trafford with all three points, leapfrogging Manchester United in the table.

With this impetus, Palace will hope to continue their upward trajectory in the Premier League table and prove that they are an unyielding force under Glasner.
