In a tense Champions League opener, Man City and Inter Milan battled to a 0-0 stalemate. Explore the key moments and expert insights from this thrilling encounter.
Introduction:
Manchester City had a goalless draw of their 2024-25 UEFA Champions League to start with, against Inter Milan at the Etihad Stadium. The teams dug deep in another cagey match to outperform each other in defense. The deadlock was as tight as it was in their contest in the 2023 Champions League final. The match took them into much tension and tactical battles, and the two clubs proved themselves on the European stage in defending.

A Familiar Rivalry
It was the first competitive match-up for Manchester City and Inter Milan, aside from the Champions League 2023 final, where City emerged victorious. On this occasion, neither of the teams could fall back on the attacking spell that won them the last encounter. The fertile goal-scoring avenues lay eerily quiet due to both teams’ robust defenses.
City have not scored at home in a Champions League match since March 2022, when they drew with Sporting CP. The game means they have one point from the expanded Champions League group stage, where they will play eight in a 36-team league phase.

A Special Ambiance
It was a special edition kit inspired by Oasis’ iconic “Definitely Maybe” album, a nod to Manchester’s rich cultural history as the team wore a retro-themed kit called “Definitely City” for selected European nights of this season.
The excitement characterized off the pitch did not quite translate on it. Erling Haaland, City’s prolific striker, would almost enjoy his first real opportunity with five minutes into the game, but Inter’s experienced defender Francesco Acerbi was able to intercept Jack Grealish’s cross, thereby stopping the Norwegian forward from breaking through the Inter’s defense line.
Inter’s Counter Attack Threat Presents a Huge Conundrum to City
Inter Milan, reigning Serie A champions, exactly proved why they have been given that label. Forward twins Marcus Thuram and Mehdi Taremi were an ever-present threat on the counterattack, capitalizing on mistakes that were made in midfield. Inter’s Swiss goalkeeper, Yann Sommer, had to be called into action 19 minutes into the game when Haaland jumped to meet a cross from Savinho for a critical save.
Inter began to come into the game in the first period. A Matteo Darmian strike forced Josko Gvardiol to head clear crucially, and shortly afterwards Ederson had to palm away a Thuram header. The Italians were knocking on the door but could not capitalize at all on the pressure as Thuram’s later effort was offside.
Man City’s Attacking Flurry
City responded with an attacking spate of their own, Erling Haaland having two moments when he was close. The low shot from 20 yards from Haaland only went a fraction of a centimeter past the far post, and Sommer expertly smothers the attempt from Kevin De Bruyne. Misfortune for the Citizens as De Bruyne night ended early as he and Savinho were substituted at halftime, and Phil Foden and Ilkay Gundogan come in.
It was Inter who showed continued impetus in the second half, with Darmian having the golden chance following an incisive pass from Taremi. Instead of shooting at goal, Darmian went for the backheel and later wasted the opportunity to break the deadlock.
Frustration Deepens for Both Teams
City kept working their way to find a way past a very resolute Inter defence but did not manage to test Sommer appropriately until the 69th minute. Jack Grealish and Ilkay Gundogan worked their way to send a one-two between them and open up some space for Foden. However, his shot was an easy take for Sommer. Inter, while mostly on the back foot due to City’s possession, looked still dangerous on their counterattacks, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan should have put his team ahead when he fired a shot over the crossbar after being set up by Denzel Dumfries.
Back on the attack, City thought Gvardiol’s strike from the box’s edge was finally going to be saved by Sommer, who produced a spectacular stop. In the dying minutes of the match, City had two last chances to win it. Gvardiol chipped the ball to Gundogan, whose header was saved and then the midfielder headed another one just over the bar from Jeremy Doku’s cross.
A Point Gathered, Lots Still to Do
Eventually, both teams would have to be satisfied with a point from a game that was more about tactical discipline than playing with an intention of scoring goals. Obviously, Manchester City could be aggrieved by the fact that they failed to win but they would take huge positives from possession play and defensive solidity. On the other hand, Inter Milan will be pleased enough by the fact that they have curbed one of the most potent attacking forces in Europe and held City to a rare goalless draw on their home soil.
