Mohammed Siraj Stars as GT Defeat SRH by 7 Wickets

Mohammed Siraj shines as GT secures a 7-wicket win over SRH. Read about the match highlights, key plays, and player performances in detail.

Introduction:

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) succumbed to their fourth consecutive defeat in IPL 2025, faltering yet again with the bat on a slow, black-soil surface at home. Despite a late cameo from Pat Cummins and some early hope during Gujarat Titans’ (GT) chase, SRH’s struggles were compounded by Mohammed Siraj’s career-best IPL figures of 4 for 17 and Washington Sundar’s explosive batting for GT. The Titans comfortably chased down SRH’s target of 153, led by Shubman Gill’s composed unbeaten knock of 61.

Mohammed Siraj Sets the Tone With a Fiery Spell

Mohammed Siraj was the architect of SRH’s batting collapse right from the start. Bowling with precision and aggression, Siraj dismissed Travis Head in the powerplay with his trademark wobble-seam delivery, forcing him to chip a catch to midwicket for just 8 runs. This was their first encounter in T20 cricket since Siraj had ignited the Border-Gavaskar Trophy battle against Head last December.

Siraj continued his dominance by removing Abhishek Sharma, who had struck four boundaries before miscuing a catch to mid-on for 24. This wicket marked Siraj’s 100th IPL scalp and his sixth in the powerplay this season, where he boasts an impressive economy rate of 6.27. Returning in the death overs, Siraj delivered two pinpoint Yorkers to dismiss Aniket Verma and Simarjeet Singh, ensuring SRH could only muster a modest total.

SRH’s Batting Struggles Persist

SRH’s batting lineup failed to fire once again, with their first six of the innings coming as late as the 13th over. Rashid Khan, who has been struggling for form this season, bowled economically in his first two overs but remained wicketless for the third consecutive game. His tournament figures now stand at 1 for 143 in 14 overs with an economy rate of 10.21.

Nitish Kumar Reddy (31 off 34 balls) and Heinrich Klaasen (27 off 19 balls) provided brief resistance but were undone by GT’s disciplined bowling attack. Left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore stood out with his control and variations, claiming two crucial wickets—Klaasen bowled by a skidding dart and Reddy caught after attempting a big shot. Sai Kishore finished with impressive figures of 4-0-24-2.

Pat Cummins offered some late fireworks for SRH, smashing an unbeaten 22 off nine balls at a strike rate above 160—the only SRH batter in the top eight to achieve such a rate. His effort helped SRH scrape past the 150-mark but left them far from a competitive total.

Washington Sundar Shines With the Bat

Gujarat Titans handed Washington Sundar his franchise debut seemingly to counter SRH’s left-hander-heavy top order with his offspin. However, GT’s bowlers dominated so thoroughly that Washington wasn’t required to bowl. Instead, he showcased his batting prowess at No. 4 after B Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler fell cheaply in successive overs.

Washington took full advantage of the last over of the powerplay, smashing Simarjeet Singh for two sixes and two fours in a display reminiscent of his attacking intent during the TNPL in 2016. His aggressive approach disrupted SRH’s plans and forced their Impact Player out of the attack. See also: KL Rahul Leads DC’s Commanding Win by 25 Run

Even after the powerplay, Washington continued his assault on SRH’s bowlers. He manufactured room against Kamindu Mendis’ ambidextrous bowling and lofted him over extra cover for four—a shot that epitomized his confidence and skill on the day. Unfortunately, he fell agonizingly short of a maiden IPL half-century, holing out for 49 in the 14th over.

Gill Anchors GT’s Chase

Shubman Gill played a pivotal role in Gujarat Titans’ chase, anchoring their innings with an unbeaten knock of 61 off 43 balls. Gill displayed excellent composure on a tricky pitch, pacing his innings perfectly while allowing Sundar and Sherfane Rutherford to play more aggressively around him.

Rutherford provided finishing touches with an unbeaten cameo of 35 off just 16 balls, ensuring there were no hiccups in GT’s chase. Together with Gill, Rutherford guided GT home comfortably as they cruised past SRH’s target with plenty of time to spare.

Key Performances: Siraj vs Sundar

The match was defined by standout performances from Mohammed Siraj and Washington Sundar—two players who dominated their respective roles. Siraj dismantled SRH’s batting lineup with precision bowling across all phases of the innings, while Sundar turned heads with his explosive batting display during GT’s chase.

For SRH, however, these individual performances were overshadowed by their collective failure to build partnerships or capitalize on scoring opportunities—a recurring theme throughout their campaign this season.

What Lies Ahead?

With this defeat, Sunrisers Hyderabad find themselves in dire straits as they struggle to find consistency both with bat and ball. Their inability to put together cohesive performances has left them languishing near the bottom of the IPL standings.

Gujarat Titans, on the other hand, continue their strong run in IPL 2025 as they aim for playoff qualification. With Washington Sundar adding depth to their squad and Shubman Gill leading from the front as captain, GT appear well-equipped to tackle tougher challenges ahead.
