Newcastle’s Late Comeback Stuns Wolves in 2-1 Thriller: Premier League

Experience the excitement of Newcastle’s thrilling late comeback against Wolves, securing a dramatic 2-1 victory. Relive the highlights and key moments here.

Introduction:

Newcastle United has come from behind to claim a dramatic second-half victory, taking the win against Wolves 2-1 at Molineux. Fabian Schar and Harvey Barnes scored in the turnaround after Mario Lemina had given the advantage going into the break. Following the victory, Newcastle now sits in third place in the Premier League, while Wolves have but one point from their first games and sit at the bottom of the league table.

The match got off to a very even start, with neither team really creating clear chances, apart from a great opportunity for Newcastle in the 22nd minute. Dancing past Nelson Semedo and Yerson Mosquera, Gordon unleashed a curling effort that agonizingly bounced off the far post and didn’t give his side the lead it desperately needed.

Wolves responded positively and were gaining in confidence as the first half of the match went on. The deadlock was finally broken for the home team in the 36th minute when Mario Lemina tapped home for the home team. A fast-paced counterattack brought Lemina’s goal as a low cross from Jorgen Strand Larsen set him up with a simple tap-in to finish the move after slyly being dummied by Joao Gomes.

After the goal, Newcastle was under control, and even chances were being created to score the second. Lemina could have scored again after being picked out by André but failed to trouble Nick Pope in the Newcastle goal with a scuffed shot.

Turnaround of the Second Half

Newcastle was in horrible form at the start of the game and, during halftime, Eddie Howe made significant changes. He brought three players into the fray: Sandro Tonali, Joe Willock, and Harvey Barnes-fresh blood that was needed so desperately in the team to give life and magic to the play.

The wolves continued to threaten on the break and Larsen hit the post early in the second half, but Newcastle had persisted and continued dominating possession to create more attacking chances.

The equalizer came in the 75th minute when Fabian Schar’s long-range strike in his stride took a huge deflection off Wolves defender Craig Dawson and left goalkeeper Sam Johnstone with no chance as the ball flew into the top corner.

Instantly the score was levelled, Newcastle presses forward with renewed fire. Five minutes later, Harvey Barnes completed the full turnaround with a curl of direct hit from the edge of the box as he has tried to make it impossible for Johnstone. There, Harvey cut in from the left side, shot an unstoppable inches past Johnstone and put Newcastle in the lead, sealing off three points.

Late Drama and Missed Opportunities for Wolves

Despite Newcastle dominating most of the game, Wolves refused to give up. In stoppage time, they almost leveled when Matheus Cunha volleyed well but was again saved by Pope so that his side kept their lead at bay. Barnes had a chance to score his third for Newcastle in the last dying moments of the game, but his chipped attempt went just wide off the post.

Despite being hopeful in the final third, Wolves had several chances but paid for missing opportunities and an exertion of composure that showed to be lacking when needed in a game to be close to producing a comeback.

Some positives from the game for Wolves despite a loss.

Of course, the Wolves manager, Gary O’Neil, will take some satisfaction from his team’s display even as it ended in disappointment. He must have been more than happy with the midfield axis of Joao Gomes and André, who once again proved to be quite an incisive force for Newcastle. Their energy and creativity dominated much of the play throughout.

Lemina’s goal spoke of the capacity of Wolves to give counterstrokes but was it their failure to prove themselves conclusively on other occasions that they lost from. As they face another match in front of local archrivals Aston Villa, they do well to build up their attacks in the striking area if they are to hold up their winless start into the season.

Newcastle’s gritty win puts fellow competitors on notice

Although Newcastle have yet to see their team show its best so far in this season, they are already learning that it costs them dearly to win games by grinding out results. Sitting two points behind Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table, there is a quiet momentum building in pursuit of European football, with some notable performances from Barns and Schar, Newcastle going into their game against Fulham ever more confident.
