Raul Jimenez Shines as Fulham Defeats Newcastle 3-1 at Craven Cottage

Discover how Raul Jimenez led Fulham to a stunning 3-1 victory over Newcastle at Craven Cottage. Read about the match highlights and key performances.

Introduction:

Fulham handed Newcastle United their first defeat of the season as they handed the Magpies their first Premier League loss with a comprehensive 3-1 win at Craven Cottage. Summer signings Raul Jimenez and Emile Smith Rowe scored in giving Fulham its second win this season, while Newcastle United suffered its first defeat. The match ended in spectacular fashion when Reiss Nelson scored in injury time.

Bright Start for Fulham

Fulham showed their intentions from the very beginning of the match. Within five minutes, it was Raul Jimenez who opened the scoring, getting excellent reflexes to chest down Adama Traore’s cross before shooting low past Newcastle’s goalkeeper, Nick Pope.

And so it ended up setting the tone for the rest of the match with Fulham in control in front of their home fans. Jimenez’s clinical movement and finish suggested that he was getting his confidence back after a trying period at Wolves.

Emile Smith Rowe Doubles Fulham’s Lead

The visitors dominated much of the play and were duly rewarded with their second goal in the 22nd minute. Having been just inches wide earlier after cracking the crossbar, Smith Rowe seized his chance when Nick Pope failed to save decisively. The ball from Smith Rowe’s effort rolled agonizingly over the line as he effectively doubled Fulham’s lead. Fluid interplay between Smith Rowe and Alex Iwobi, which led to the goal, depicted a growing understanding between the newcomers.

Newcastle, however, survived the storm for the rest of the first half. Pope had to make some quality saves, including a defining block with his legs to deny Traore, and Newcastle remained within touching distance at 2-0 going into the break.

Newcastle Fight Back

Newcastle reemerged much better in the second half, and it was just minutes into that period when it managed to convert its lead down to 2-1. Harvey Barnes rounded off an intense tempo for the start of the second period with a ruthless finish, scoring in the 46th minute, which revived the hope and got the show ready for an extremely competitive second period.

Halftime switch. More importantly, Eddie Howe’s changes of Jacob Murphy and Lewis Hall did that. Murphy assisted in Barnes’ goal, and pressure from the Newcastle side was high, but Fulham’s defense ensured they could not get an equalizer. Similarly, crucial saves by Bernd Leno kept the lead going.

Chances Not Capitalized by Newcastle

Newcastle had three chances to equalize at least and will regret not going for them. Fabian Schar was close to punishing the rare mistake by Leno, who misdirected a goal-kick, but his shot went beyond the limits of the goal. Anthony Gordon and Murphy, too, had good opportunities but could not convert.

Although Fulham piled on so much pressure on Newcastle, they were unable to find a way forward. The visitors lacked the lethal finish to convert their possession into goals and, toward the end, Fulham managed the game rather well, remaining composed with the passing of time.

Nelson Seals the Victory

In added time, Fulham seal the deal. Substitute Reiss Nelson fired in a powerful shot to the roof of the net with a loose ball after Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes lost it. It was one minute after Newcastle had failed in attempts to break through and thus sealed all three points for Fulham.

Game Management Key to Fulham’s Success

Marco Silva’s team was pretty good at game management, something they’d failed to do in their last few matches. One week ago, Fulham let that home side at West Ham equalize late for 1-1, but today, they were not so complacent. A great choice by Silva, playing Jimenez rather than Rodrigo Muniz, and an early goal from the Mexican striker helped send his side to a win.

We can highlight the Fulham team’s pride in the second half as they dug deep under pressure and were still showing a threat on counter-attacks. Nelson’s late goal reflected the determination to win it all and to gain some momentum hoping to propel them upward towards an eighth place in the Premier League table.

Newcastle’s Unbeaten Run Comes to an End

Newcastle will take their first loss of the season, at least after having enough moments in which to turn the game around. Eddie Howe’s team did not stand up to the early pressure by Fulham and paid with defensive failures. Despite a great start, this loss sends them down to a place sixth on the table.

Howes’ changes in the half almost turned the match in their favor but for lack of a killer finish in the final third hurt them. Newcastle will need to regroup to avoid losing further ground in the Premier League.
