Reiten’s Penalty Helps Chelsea Defeat Madrid 3-2 in Women’s Champions League

In a dramatic Women’s Champions League clash, Reiten’s penalty leads Chelsea to a 3-2 win over Madrid. Read about the match’s pivotal moments and insights.

Introduction:

A nail-biting 3-2 win for Chelsea, under new coach Sonia Bompastor, over Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge, sees Chelsea being on a winning spree of their own. Or that is, at least, it was totally far from straight-forward as there were glimpses of brilliance from both sides and the audience managed to keep their nerve intact all along until the final whistle in the Women’s Champions League.

Early Pressure by Chelsea.

Chelsea broke through with this quick transition in the 6th minute, directly resulting from Real Madrid’s aggression in pressing high. Johanna Rytting Kaneryd made a darting run down the right wing, delivering a superb cross into the box. Sjoeke Nüsken met it with a glancing header; it deflected off Shei García and into the net. An own goal would be unfortunate for Madrid, but it speaks volumes about Chelsea’s clinical attacking style.

Guro Reiten’s cool penalty

Chelsea’s pressure remained the other team’s headache, and when Nüsken was taken clumsy with Atleti’s Sosa, the referee sent the protagonist to the penalty spot. Her nerves were made of ice as Guro Reiten calmly converted the spot kick low into the right corner of Misa Rodríguez. Misa would go in the right direction, but this one went in too well.

Real Madrid Come Back Fighting

Chelsea played off to take a two-goal lead. At this point, it appeared that Real Madrid was not going to cope with the pressure. However, Madrid was not ready to quit. The captain Ivana Andrés and the winged expert Olga Carmona pushed ahead to look for holes on Chelsea’s defense. Madrid was fruitful in seeking some openings before half time. Crossed by the left wing by Olga, the shot by Athenea del Castillo went through somehow blocked by Baltimore of Chelsea. However, the rebound fell nicely for Alba Redondo. She impressively demonstrated closed control, slotting the ball into the legs of Chelsea goalkeeper Zecira Musovic to make it 2-1.

Redondo’s strike gave some hope and confidence to the visiting side as Madrid prepared to go into the second half believing they had a chance at overturning the deficit.

The game started off on the right track for Chelsea in its second half as it edged towards reclaiming the lost momentum. It kept possession of the ball and gradually organized attacks with patience and precision. Lauren James was influential throughout, producing a wonderful cross from the right wing in the 53rd minute. Colombian international Mayra Ramírez leapt high, meeting the cross with a powerful header that looped over Misa Rodríguez and into the net. Chelsea’s two-goal cushion was restored, and it looked like it was going to cruise to victory.

Madrid’s Late Flutter

Real Madrid, however, were to have other ideas. A fair bit more up in pace, Caroline Weir of Scotland marshalled the play from central midfield. A hanging cross from Weir came close to finding Redondo at the near post but evaded all claimers.

Again, persistence paid off as a fierce shot from the right side of the box by Eva Navarro was parried off from Chelsea’s defense, and in reaction, substitute Linda Caicedo was quick enough to poke it in from close quarters. She had got her first Champions League goal; and with their score now at 3-2, Chelsea experienced nervy finishing moments.

Chelsea Hold On for Victory

Well, the final moments of the game were full of attempts from Real Madrid just trying to make things level with the score. Chelsea’s defense, marshaled by Kadeisha Buchanan and Jess Carter, handled the frantic efforts of Madrid well as there were anxieties faced by the Blues, but they managed to hold in for their third consecutive win against Madrid in group stage.

Key Performances

Victory on the day came in a total team effort, as the team featured from end to end in individual displays. Johanna Rytting Kaneryd was instrumental in the first minute of play, providing a decisive assist that set the tone for the match. Sjoeke Nüsken won the penalty, doing a lot to pressure the Madrid defense, and set up loads of attacking opportunities for Chelsea. Mayra Ramírez played a big physical role in front of Chelsea attack, while the involvement of both wings by Lauren James put more pressure on Madrid’s defense.

Alba Redondo held on as the main figure for Real Madrid, helping in ensuring that she finished well and provided some hope for her side to chase. Linda Caicedo was tenacious in front of the goal and as the result Chelsea had much more possession; that still would not end up winning the match, something to be expected until the final whistle was heard.

Conclusion

Chelsea proved their mettle as they tightened their hold on top position in Group D of the Champions League with a 3-2 win at Real Madrid. The visitors made it five straight home victories as the hosts finally capitalized on their attacking display late to make the score more respectable. Though disappointed by the result, Madrid will take heart from the attacking promise provided by their new-look side, and there is still much to look forward to.
