Introduction:

International cricket returned to the breathtaking Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala as India and Afghanistan squared off in a highly anticipated three-match ODI series opener. Heavy, relentless rain forced a long delay of over four hours, severely threatening to wash out the match. However, excellent work from the ground staff allowed the skies to clear enough for a rapid, explosive 25-overs-per-side contest.

Winning the toss under overcast conditions, India’s newly appointed ODI skipper Shubman Gill opted to field first, hoping his bowlers could make the most of any moisture on the track. What followed was a high-octane encounter filled with spectacular individual performances. Despite a majestic, rapid century from Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz, India’s debutants turned the tide before a masterclass batting response sealed an authoritative seven-wicket victory for the hosts.

Gurbaz Blitzkrieg Countered by Dream Debuts

Afghanistan’s innings began in a shaky fashion as the Indian opening bowlers immediately hit the right lengths. Fast bowler Arshdeep Singh extracted sharp movement through the air, sending back Sediqullah Atal for a duck. Meanwhile, debutant right-arm quick Gurnoor Brar enjoyed a dream start to his international career, dismissing the dangerous Ibrahim Zadran for just one run in his very first over. With Rahmat Shah also falling cheaply to Arshdeep, the visitors were left tottering at a nervous 24 for 3.

However, wicketkeeper-batsman Rahmanullah Gurbaz refused to back down. He single-handedly resurrected the innings, putting on a breathtaking counter-attacking display that completely stunned the home crowd. Gurbaz brought up his 9th ODI century in astonishing fashion, scoring 102 runs off a mere 51 deliveries, an innings laced with eight boundaries and eight colossal sixes. At 132 for 3, Afghanistan looked completely on track to post a massive total.

The game turned on its head in the 16th over when Nitish Kumar Reddy finally broke the threatening stand, cleaning up Gurbaz. This dismissal opened the floodgates for India’s fresh faces. Left-arm spinner Harsh Dubey spun a web around the middle order, taking a double-blow over to dismiss Azmatullah Omarzai and Allah Ghazanfar, finishing with an impactful debut haul of 3 for 47. Gurnoor Brar then returned in the final over to wrap up the tail nicely, cleaning up Rashid Khan and Ziaur Rahman to end with stellar figures of 3 for 27, bowling out Afghanistan for 194 in 24.5 overs. Shubman Gill Anchors Flawless Indian Run Chase

Chasing a target of 195 runs at nearly eight runs per over required a steady yet aggressive start. Senior batter Rohit Sharma got the ball rolling, opening the innings alongside Gill and dispatching a signature, milestone maximum into the stands. However, a major mix-up saw Rohit run out for 16 after he failed to get past the bowler’s follow-through, leaving India at 25 for 1.

Left-hander Ishan Kishan then joined his captain in the middle, and the duo immediately took the attack to the opposition. Showing excellent chemistry, Kishan slammed a brisk 34 off 22 balls to push India’s score past the 100-run mark in the 12th over. Although premier spinner Rashid Khan provided temporary relief for Afghanistan by removing Kishan, skipper Shubman Gill remained completely untroubled.
