Witness Sima and Baldé’s stellar performance as Brest triumphs over Salzburg with a commanding 4-0 victory in the Champions League.
Introduction:
It was an intense Champion League game, and FC Salzburg traveled to France to play Stade Brestois. At the end of it, the Austrian side fluffed all those chances after gaining complete mastery over the game. An early and persistent press from the opponents hardly allowed Brest time on the ball, but they showed unwavering optimism, flair, and impressive defensive solidity in countering attacks that turned the game completely in their favor. Salzburg may have been more eager and bolder than most teams that visit Paris, but the composed defense at Brest left them winless at the end of it all.

Salzburg’s Initial Press and Brest’s Composure
Salzburg began by pressing hard in the early stages of the match. Brest, however, stayed composed. The awareness of the team and the flexibility in acclimatizing to Salzburg’s high tempo paved the way for the first portion of the game.
Decision Reversed: Ruling Goal for Salzburg
A very early changing point came when Salzburg seemed to have scored, but after a VAR check offside, it was nullified. No. 27 of Salzburg was ruled as offside and so he obstructed the view from the clear glance of the goal by the goalkeeper on that event. The goal would have come well in hand for Salzburg had they managed to take the lead early in the match, but this was the beginning frustration on that day.
Konaté’s Threat and Brest’s Defensive Struggles
And yet, in the second half of the game, Salzburg started to exert a larger sway, pushing Brest constantly deeper into their half; indeed, this team was creating chances by dozens of occasions. Salzburg’s quick-bursting striker Konaté, from Ivory Coast, was perfectly in the middle of everything that happened around him. His speed and willingness to get on the ball were such evils for the defensive line of Brest that it endured dozens of heavy knocks. Unable to handle the speed of action by Konaté, Brest could hold out only until the end.
Sima’s Brilliancy: Two Goals in Two Games
Once again, Sima of Brest had been the difference-maker. In the first matchday when Brest played Sturm Graz, Sima had scored the winner. He was the difference-maker this time too. After a great pass from Ajorque who caught him running through Salzburg’s backline, Sima stayed calm even when two defenders closed him down to slot it calmly past the goalkeeper to give Brest the lead.
While Sima’s confidence and ability to seize on critical moments was ever present, Brest had become now increasingly composed and controlled in their play after going ahead.
Salzburg’s Response: Missed Opportunities
Despite absorbing most of the possession and crafting several scoring opportunities, Salzburg was unable to convert the chances they created until Sima put the French team ahead. The visitors then unleashed attack after attack in the closing stages of the first half.
But the Brest defense spearheaded by goalkeeper Marco Bizot stood firm on a number of occasions.
Bizot made a couple of crucial saves that could have given lethal Salzburg forwards the spaces to unlock the Brest rearguard, but Brest managed to enter the halftime break with its one-goal lead intact.
Masterclass in counterattack
Brest’s potency on the counter was the game-changing stat of the day. But in pushing for the equalizing score, Salzburg left open the spaces. Here, Bizot launched into a swift counterattack by going wide to find Baldé, whose cross enabled Camara to clinically hit the back of the net with his second of the game. That was essentially a copy of the first half: Salzburg dominating proceedings but Brest’s striking prowess down a counter was the cold end for them once again.
Sima Strikes Again
As Salzburg were beginning to scramble back into the game, Sima once again proved to be the hero for Brest. Hugo Magnetti’s shot rebounded perfectly into the path of Sima, and the forward did not waste a second in ensuring his brace. It was this goal, therefore, his third in just two Champions League matches that sealed the fate of Salzburg. The composure of the Brest team under pressure and their ice-cold finishing were just too much for Salzburg.
Baldé’s Finishing Touch
To seal an extremely good performance, Baldé awarded Brest a fourth goal injury time. Another left-back attack saw the Portuguese midfielder taunt Brest’s defense on the left wing, finding a low shot into the bottom corner thus further punishing Salzburg for lapses at the back. Salzburg still held the majority of the possession and did their best to control the game but was finally overturned by Brest’s clinical counterattacks and neat finishing.
Conclusion: Brilliant tactics by Brest were too much for Salzburg’s game.
Salzburg dominated gigantic portions of the game, but tactically, Brest outshone them as the counterattacks were so precise. It is one thing to have Simone headed by Sima and another thing to be pigeon-holed behind the Bizot-led goalkeeping. Salzburg will learn a hard lesson about taking chances not to overcommit themselves when they are attacking. For Brest, the two successive victories put Salzburg into a precarious spot after two successive defeats.
