Turbeville worked in both color and black and white. The two cornerstones of his visual language were reminiscent of the style of pictorialism typical of his predecessors operating between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and the attitude to understand photography not so much as the creation of images but as a personal intervention on the supports on which they were recorded. That’s why he experimented in the darkroom, printed on papers that gave the photos a material appearance, composed collages and added texts. He did it with more freedom when he didn’t have to conform to the editorial lines of the big fashion magazines, so it was through his books that he more fully expressed his vision. Beginning with the first work he published, Chicory (Congreve, 1978). It was a manifesto in which he revealed the themes and style that would underpin all his future works, some of which became famous for offering a new interpretation of a setting that was already strongly characterized on a visual level.
