OPERATIONS 5, 6, AND 7 JANUARY 2024: ROADS DURING Epiphany WEEKEND

Information on operations on January 5 and 6, 2024, on which departures are concentrated on the Epiphany weekend counts for a rather complex 48 hours of operation from late morning on Friday, January 5, in the direction of important mountain tourist centers and cities of art. The situation will be critical until late afternoon and will continue in the same manner on Saturday, in this case, from daybreak. Departures could be mixed with the first returns of those who have already left for Christmas or the New Year, further congesting traffic. However, most returns will take place on Sunday, January 7, 2024, which creates the basis for queues and traffic jams throughout the day. As for the weather conditions, a clear deterioration is unfortunately expected after the period of abnormal heat.

OPERATION JANUARY 5, 2024

The January 5, 2024 traffic was dense and intense in the morning, especially in the north direction and especially on the A22 Brennero, on the Milan-Lakes highway, and on the A5 Turin-Mont Blanc, as well as on the A24 that goes from Rome to Abruzzo (Gran Sasso, Roccaraso, Scanno, etc. ). Probable critical problems are also on the Ligurian arteries and the A4 Turin-Trieste.

Forecast: worsening in the northwest, Sardinia, and the central-northern Tyrrhenian sector, with rain and showers spreading to the northeast and snow from 600/800 meters in the Alps. More intense phenomena in Liguria, lower Piedmont, Lombardy, and in the evening also in the upper Trivenet. Rain is also coming to northern Tuscany. Good weather conditions remain in southern areas.

OPERATION JANUARY 6, 2024

Those who did not have time to leave on the 5th will leave already in the very early hours of the Befana day to reach their goal quickly. As already mentioned, the first returns are also likely to occur during the 6th, and in this case, we will also see traffic on routes such as the A14 Jadran and from the mountains and lakes towards the big cities.

Forecast: bad weather will gradually leave the northwest and concentrate on the northeast, Emilia Romagna, central regions, and Sardinia. It will also worsen in the rest of the south during the afternoon and evening, starting with Sicily and Campania. Locally intense and stormy phenomena are expected, with snow in the Alps ranging from 500 to 900m.

OPERATION JANUARY 7, 2024

On Sunday, January 7, 2024, traffic was intense and critical from early morning, especially on the A22 Brennero (in the direction of Modena, there is even a black sticker in the time slot 12–18), on the Milan–Laghi motorway, and the A5 Turin–Mont Blanc, as well as on the A24 Rome–Teramo (Grand Sasso, Roccaraso, Scanno, etc.), of course towards the metropolises. Critical problems also exist on the Ligurian arteries, on the A14 northbound, and the A4 Turin-Trieste, with peak traffic expected between 11:00 and 19:00.

Forecast: severe weather is still in action across much of the north except for the extreme northwest, central areas, and peninsular south. Locally, heavy precipitation is still expected in the form of thunderstorms with snow up to low altitudes in the northeast and on hills or low mountain levels in the central and northern Apennines.

For real-time monitoring operations on January 5, 6, and 7, 2024, there are numerous online services available, such as the excellent Waze and Google Maps, which now also report fixed speed cameras. You can also use different apps (for example, VAI by Anas), or you can call the Autostrade call center at 840.04.21.21 (with a one-time connection fee, without time limit), always active 24 hours a day, or CCISS at number 1518 (free and 24/7).

Due to the season, make sure you follow the rules about having to put on winter tires before you leave. The following link shows all Italian national roads that require duty winter tires or chains on board, while here there are highways.
